Serena 2013.07.15

Selected Words from H. E. Garchen Rinpoche’s Precious Teachings I

~ Instructions for All ~

Part I

Holding no difference between self and others,

The mind of all beings are equal without exception,

Vast as the sky without any kind of obstructions,

Only obscured by temporary clouds of afflictions.

Sometimes more and sometimes less, clouds arising interdependently,

There lies no comparison of being superior or inferior unawakenedly.

When viewing self as higher than others arrogantly,

What is the base if our minds are equal essentially?

Seeing others with gain and fame,

Prosperous with enormous wealth,

Rejoice their merits accumulated since long ago,

With no envy towards them or longing for that goal.

If shaken by the Eight Winds due to desire,

Searching for one’s benefit and putting others’ aside,

The mind goes with heavy karmas like a rock so tight,

Falling downwards inevitably when death should arrive.

Altruistic mind is like the supreme jewel,

Constantly valuing others more than self,

The mind than becomes soft and light as goose feather,

Floating to Pure Land along the wind of merit during Bardo.

Children and relatives deserve no affection,

Each bearing one’s own karma for individual fruition,

Since you’ve already obtained this precious human body,

Might as well fulfill your practice with whole attention.

Part II

Water and ice, same in essence,

Stay as hard, the mind without practice,

Endowed with Buddha nature, it never melts

Until taking refuge and compassion is held.

Loving-kindness, also a kind of compassion,

Narrowed and wallowed in so many conditions,

Not because it is a misdeed by default,

The ego that defiles it is the major fault.

Beings are the tangible form of ego,

Deities are the tangible form of compassion,

Chanting their names and mantras with visualization,

Praying to deities so that compassion will arise,

Expanding loving-kindness into the Bodhicitta mind,

Working for the benefit of others so as to become accordingly kind.

Diminishing the ego and developing compassion,

Such is the essence of all taught Dharma,

Also is the root of all different Samayas,

Diligent in so than gradually brings the emptiness-realization.

The Thirty-Seven Verses are the practice of compassion,

Starting from reflecting and repaying others’ grace,

In sequence from parents, teachers, and spiritual friends,

To one’s own country, people, and all kinds of race.

Not harming others, go helping beings,

Perceiving all as pure, enhancing them by steps,

The ice cube gently melts into water so ego stays no more.

Abide the meaning of four lines and Buddhahood shall come forth:

Commit no wrong, perfect all virtue,

Tame one’s mind, such is said by the Buddha.

Selected Words from H. E. Garchen Rinpoche’s Precious Teachings II

For parents or educators/teachers especially ~

When raising children or teaching students,

Leading them to the right path kind-heartedly,

So that they will contribute to others for sure,

You’re gathering much merit from this undoubtedly.

When they’re naughty or grouchy that makes you “itchy,”

Nice words and advice should be providing with no punching.

Scold them if you may when still behaving wildly,

But first settle down your mind in peace.

Though showing wrathful, meditating on compassion,

Uttering necessary reprimand, without any aggression,

Treat them with sky-like opened mind generously,

So that they will open their mind accordingly.

If one can unbound one’s own karmic knots,

Others must also be endowed with Buddha nature.

Always emulating masters and excellent practitioners a lot,

Would ultimate enlightenment be a far-away spot?

For those who wish to benefit beings through translation or charity works ~

Arouse no pride when benefiting others,

Offer with no thoughts that they are lower,

Purify one’s motivation when performing activities,

Therefore you gather infinite virtue from charities.

Translating or transmitting Dharma, Sutras and Shastras,

Such is like opening the wisdom eyes of others,

For they will obtain realization based on the words of teachers,

Therefore such virtue is counted as preciously brighter.

Great Lotsawas and renowned Lamas in the past,

Enduring extreme hardship when striving for Dharma with their best,

Learned and accomplished in profound realization,

Such noble features always outshine the rest.

Stupid person like me, with no experience ever perceived,

Work hard only on polishing words and passages,

However with the blessings of Guru’s messages,

Pray with devotion and so comprehension will be achieved.

Deity practice such as Amitabha or Arya Tara alike,

Is aimed at seeing one’s own nature of mind.

The intent of Noble Assembly is unhindered as the sky,

Meditate to know the inseparability of their and mine.

Aspiration should be followed once you vow to benefit others,

Observing the Thirty-Seven Bodhisattva Practices in all manners,

Complain no tiredness and grumble no suffering,

Dread no smudges and fear no dying!
