Khandro Tsering Chödrön (Tib. མཁའ་འགྲོ་ཚེ་རིང་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་, Wyl. mkha’ ‘gro tshe ring chos sgron) (1929-2011), the spiritual wife of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö, was universally acknowledged as one of the foremost female practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism of recent times and was considered to be an emanation of Shelkar Dorje Tso.

Biography
傳記

Khandro was born in the Earth Snake year (1929) into the Aduk Lakar family of Kham Trehor, an ancient family of benefactors who supported many monasteries and teachers in Tibet dating back to the time of Je Tsongkhapa. Her mother was Dechen Tso, a princess of Ling, who was married to the two Lakar brothers Tutob Namgyal and Sonam Tobgyal. She became Jamyang Khyentse's spiritual wife in 1948, at a time when he was in poor health and many of his disciples were urging him to take a consort to prolong his life. For the next eleven years she served as his attendant and devoted companion, receiving countless teachings and transmissions, requesting practices and prayers and putting questions to him in the form of songs.

According to Dzongsar Ngari Tulku (Tenzin Khedrup Gyatso), on one occasion [c.1952], when Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö was opening the sacred place of Khyungchen Paldzong (ཁྱུང་ཆེན་དཔལ་རྫོང་, khyung chen dpal rdzong), known locally as Gyalgen Khyungtak (རྒྱ་རྒན་ཁྱུང་ལྟག་, rgya rgan khyung ltag), above Dzongsar Monastery, Jamyang Khyentse, Gyarong Khandro, Khandro Tsering Chödrön and Sogyal Rinpoche all left their handprints in the solid rock.

Together with her elder sister, Tsering Wangmo whose husband Tsewang Paljor was Jamyang Khyentse's private secretary, the young Sogyal Rinpoche, Lama Chokden and a small party of family and attendants, she accompanied Jamyang Khyentse to Central Tibet in 1955, during which time her tutor Lama Tseten passed away near Yamdrok Tso. From Central Tibet the party went to India and to Sikkim, making their residence at the temple of the Royal Palace in Gangtok.

Khandro continued to live there for many years after Jamyang Khyentse passed away in 1959, quietly devoting her life to constant prayer in the presence of his reliquary stupa. During this time she read the entire Kangyur and Tengyur. She travelled from Sikkim to Europe and America several times (see dates and places below) at the request of her nephew Sogyal Rinpoche. On 5th of December 2006, near the beginning of Rigpa's first three-year retreat, Khandro Tsering Chödrön took residence in Lerab Ling.
Khandro Tsering Chödrön passed away on the 24th day of the 3rd lunar month (26th May 2011) in Lerab Ling. Sogyal Rinpoche and Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche were both present at the moment of her passing where she showed all the signs of attaining the final accomplishment of a great Dzogchen practitioner.

Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche's Stories of Shechen Kongtrül
Read by Larry Mermelstein
19 December 2013

This passage from Tulku Urgyen's memoirs was read by Larry Mermelstein during a Sun of Wisdom feast in Halifax some years ago. The Sun of Wisdom is a guru sadhana composed by Trungpa Rinpoche to his root guru, Jamgön Kongtrül of Shechen. This exceptionally beautiful sadhana was the first feast liturgy practiced by Trungpa Rinpoche's western students, starting in the 1970s. Karma Senge Rinpoche has chosen to incorporate the feast section from this sadhana as an alternative, more elaborate feast offering to be used for The Sadhana of Mahamudra and for the Vidyadhara's sadhanas of Avalokiteshvara and Tröma Nagmo. For more information, including how to order the sadhana, please visit THE SUN OF WISDOM.

    (1) Kagyu Gurtso (Rain of Wisdom) CD-DVD set
    http://www.konchok.org/donation_gifts.php?action=1&id=144

A 51 minute CD and 17 minute DVD of monks at Surmang Dutsi Til, led by Karma Senge Rinpoche, performing selections from the Kagyu Gurtso. Nine songs are included in the CD and five songs on the DVD. This is one of the first recordings of these songs of realization by Milarepa, Marpa, Gampopa, and others.

The songs included on the CD and DVD were recorded at Surmang Dutsi Til by Jon Ransohoff and Lyndon Comstock in August 2010. Four short videos about Surmang Dutsi Til are also included on the DVD. Recitation of the Kagyu Gurtso (Rain of Wisdom) on the annual anniversary of Milarepa’s parinirvana has been a tradition for centuries in Tibetan Kagyu monasteries, including Surmang.

The Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche instituted this tradition within the Shambhala community in the West in 1980, following the translation of the Kagyu Gurtso into English as The Rain of Wisdom. This CD and DVD provide the first opportunity for us in the West to hear these songs as they are recited at Surmang. The printed insert for the set provides page references for each song in The Rain of Wisdom. Khyentse Rinpoche's
Teachings in Halifax

By Andrew Safer
During his talks on the foreword to The Rain of Wisdom, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche marveled at Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche's guru devotion, vision, and tremendous contribution towards transplanting the buddhadharma in the West. Noting that "the younger generation doesn't mention the guru much," he referred to the Colophon. The opening lines read:
Ah ho! Precious Kagyu, forefather of a hundred siddhas.
You are the amrita which dispels the mind's suffering.
You alone are the guide who leads one on the path of liberation.
What joy that your profound brilliant wisdom has entered my heart!
Four hundred and seventy people attended Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche's Friday night talk at Citadel High School's Spatz Auditorium. The weekend program, which was sponsored by Siddhartha's Intent, was attended by members of the Shambhala sangha, students of Khyentse Rinpoche, and Haligonians coming to their first dharma talk. In addition, nearly 1,000 people tuned in to the weekend program remotely via live webcast with support from the Shambhala Sun Foundation and Siddhartha's Intent.
After noting that his mother was Kagyu and he grew up with the Kagyu Gurtso, Rinpoche shared lessons learned from Tilopa, Naropa, and Milarepa. For his day job, Tilopa, the father of the Kagyu lineage, coaxed the oil out of sesame seeds by pounding them. The only way you can do this, explained Rinpoche, is if you know the oil is in there, since you can't tell by looking at the seeds. In the same way, "We don't look like Buddha," he added, likening this to a man who is frantically looking for water while holding a piece of ice. "If you relax," he noted, "you have confidence that it becomes water."
He discussed doubt, and in the same breath, the presence—even necessity—of obstacles on the spiritual path. Reflecting on the Vajra Regent Osel Tendzin who wrote the Preface to The Rain of Wisdom, he said, "The Vajra Regent was the most heroic manifestation of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche." He added that appointing the Regent and dapons was like establishing "a forest" (Central Park) in the middle of New York City—both indicative of vast vision.
Rinpoche cautioned that because there is a strong temptation to remain in calm abiding (shamatha), what is needed to stir and shake it up is "the sharp, piercing blatant power of vipashyana."
Returning to the Colophon, he read aloud the following stanza, remarking on its profundity:
In the space of the ground mahamudra of luminous emptiness,
Traveling on the path mahamudra of luminous insight,
In the fruition mahamudra of luminous bliss—
May all beings of the three realms be liberated.
As for the ground mahamudra of luminous emptiness, Rinpoche noted that it can't be beautified or made better. On the other end of the scale, if only the luminous aspect is seen, that's eternalism"overly believing in what is believable"which he said jokingly would result in being reborn in California. However, if only the emptiness aspect is seen"nihilism"the result would be rebirth in France.
In talking about ordinary mind, Rinpoche said the reason we have anxiety is we try to make it special. This led into a commentary on Naropa. At Nalanda, Naropa shared the dominant worldview of no pain, no gain, which he later transformed through Tantric practice into all gain, no pain.
Following his talk on Friday, Rinpoche conducted a youth audience attended by about 55 people. After the final talk on Saturday, Rinpoche performed Refuge and Bodhisattva Vow ceremonies; and later that evening at the Shambhala Centre, he delivered a hot, provocative, feast-together-in-the-dharma talk to sadhakas.
